![]() appearing after death: muslin outer form for Katie King |
Nineteenth-century spiritualism held that mediums, concealed in cabinets, materialized the dead as ectoplasm, lit. ‘outer form’.
10m of muslin are used to explore this crucial tenet. Two thirds recreate a costume for Katie King, a renowned spirit guide of 19th century séances, based on photographs of the medium Florence Cook materializing her. Cook, the most celebrated materialization medium of the 1870’s, was repeatedly tested to detect fraudulent displays. The medium was tied to the chair in her cabinet, or tied with leashes held by those present. The remaining muslin makes 5 bandage leashes for the medium’s limbs and neck. |
